Notes for Ernest Collard
In 1881 he and Caroline were living with their two sons at 3 Junction Road, Croydon, Surrey with a monthly nurse (aged 4!!) and two servants, sisters.
In 1901 he and Caroline were living with their elder son Douglas at 78 Croydon Road, Beckenham, Kent; Ernest was 45, a timber merchant and born in Hillborough, Kent. They had two living in servants, a cook and a housemaid.
In 1901 he was a wodower with just a cook in the house and living at 14 Cromwell Road, Hove. Note that this was in the registration District of Steyning, which is where his death was found.

FreeBMD has but one Ernest who was born in 1851-1859 in Kent:
Collard, Ernest, Q1 of 1856, Blean district, vol 2a, p. 566
Blean includes Herne Bay and Hillborough is a small village outside Herne Bay. It must be he.

FreeBMD has an Ernest Collard who d. 1918 aged 62 but in Steyning, Sussex so not very probably his death.
Oct 2007, TFPL: Dunno why I made the last remark as his death in 1918 aged 62 precisely matches his birth in 1856, so I think it is him and have entered it accordingly.
