Notes for Captain Henry Sholto Douglas
Gt-gt-gt-uncle to Rose Webb who informed me of him and his daughter and son-in-law.

In June 1843 he was stationed in Malta, a Lt, with the 1st battalion of the 42nd (The Royal Highland) Regiment.

I wonder if this death is his:

Surname   First name(s)   Age   District   Vol  Page
Deaths Dec 1892   (>99%)
Douglas Henry Sholto 71 S. Shields 10a 40

The Douglases with the earldom of Morton (S) often carried the Sholto forename.

Jeremy Douglas sent me a couple of photos of gravestones in St Mary's Church, South Stoneham, Saint Mary's Church Close, Southampton, one for him stating he was 70 at death, and one for his daughter Ethel who died on 10 July 1887 aged 23.  To corroborate the latter, here is the FreeBMD index record:

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

Deaths Sep 1887   (>99%)
Douglas Ethel Louise 23 Alderbury 5a 103

But no other entries can be found on English publis records.

From a research paper held on the Australian Trove site, it appears that his family had held a Scots estate called Timperdean, Roxburghshire for many generations from c.1500 to the middle of the 19th century when George Douglas, elder brother to this Henry Sholto Douglas, sold the property.  The first Douglas to hold this proerty was descended through a natural daughter from one William earl of Douglas, apparently sometime in the middle of the 15th century.  I am not researching this further as they are only related by marriage of a daughter of this Henry Sholto Douglas to a half brother of Mary Hodgson Gillett who married Henry Eden Trotter and are my gt-grandparents.
