Tonge’s Visitation of the North of 1530 [sic] has this grant within it:
FERRAND
20 Mar 1586, 29 Eliz. By William Flower.
William Ferrand of Skipton within Craven, in the Countrye of Yorke, gentleman, sonne of Christopher, the sonne of William, sonne and heire of Robert Ferrand, that was sonne of Roger Farrand and Issabell his wife, daughter and sole heire of William Dawtriue of the same countye, is well borne and dessended of progenitors bearing signes and tokens of there race and gentrie called armes. -- He notwithstanding, carefully mindinge the orderlye usage and bearing of them, hath required me the said Norroy to yeld hime my helpe and advice herein, and to addorne the healme with such creast or cognisance as may be lawfully allowed. -- He may beare quarterly these two severall coats or armes: The first, Argent, on a chiefe gules two crosses patees [drawn as patence] varie, for the peculiar arms of his surname; The other, Asure, five fuciauls in fesse argent with a baston gueles, by the name of Dawtryue: And for his creast of cognisance, an arme, rysing from out of the wreath or torce argent and gules, holding a battell axe argent; the hand a proper couler, the manch varrys: Thereunto adding manttles of gules with tassells appendant as the usage is, doubled or lyned argent. Which arms &c. -- I -- doe -- ratifie, confirme, give and grant unto the said William Ferrand, and to all the dessents, ofspring, and posteritie of the beforenamed Roger Ferrand and Issabell Dawtriae -- with there due differences.
