Notes for John Latham
He lived in Strond Street, St James parish, Dover.

He must have been a merchant, owning several houses, a wharf and a warehouse.

IGI shows a John Latham, son of Peter Latham, to be christened on 14 April 1717 in Wilmington parish church, Kent, but the evidence for this to be him is a bit thin.  Batch No P012531.

I received this answer on 29th December 2008 to a query to Dover Reference Library:

I have found the following information for you regarding John Latham -

He was Mayor of Dover 1767, 1779 and 1788
He was the first member of the Latham family to take part in Dover
Corporation affairs.
Samuel Latham, his grandfather came from Lewes and settled in Dover in 1664.
John and his father became Freeman.
The Lathams first started in the shipping business and then became
bankers.
He lived in Strond Street (no longer) which faced the harbour below
Commercial Quay.
The Henshaws were boat builders, and when Henry Henshaw died he left his estate to Sarah Henshaw, his daughter and the future Mrs. John Latham and to his sister.
Sarah met John Latham when he was working as her Father's apprentice and on gaining his Freedom by apprenticeship on May 31st 1745, they married.

For more information on the Lathams, Henshaws and Minets you may want to contact Mrs. Lorraine Sencicle, a noted local writer and historian, who has written an excellent book called "Banking on Dover".

- I’ve asked for copies of the documents and sent off an enquiry to obtain the book -
________________

Jan 2008, TFPL: The book has arrived and the Lathams are indeed a prosperous family of shipowners and merchants, becoming bankers in 1789.

John was apprenticed to Henry Henshaw as a boatbuilder and shipper.  He completed this by May 31st 1745 when he gained his Freedom of Dover and married the boss’ daughter, Sarah.

Edward Henshaw (not Benshaw as I originally thought) is almost certainly the chap whose will is in PCC and on Documents-on-line as:

Will of Edward Henshaw, Linen Draper of Saint George the Martyr Southwark , Surrey 13 August 1790 PROB 11/1195
