Notes for Ralph II Basset
m. (2) Margaret, widow of Urian de St Pierre.

G W Watson in The Genealogist N.S. Vol XXVIII of October 1911 writes:

Urian de St Piere, of Peckforton, Horsley, etc. Co Chester. who d. shortly before 25 feb 1294/5, left a widow, Margaret, who, as it appears from various writs on the Close Rolls concerning her dower, m., less that 6 months afterwards, Ralph Basset.
...
The person whom she remarried was really Ralph Basset of Sapcote, knight of the shire for Stafford in the parliaments of 28 and 29 Edw I.:-

Hac est finalis concordia facta in Curia domini Regis apud Ebor' a die sancte Trinitatis in quindecim dies Anno Regni Regnis Edward filij Regis Henrici vicesimo sexto Coram, etc. (Petrum Finium, Sussex, case 235, file 36, no 32).

Carol Mc Donald, in her treatise “Basset of Sapcote and Calendar Rolls” received on Wednesday 1st February 2012, states, pp. 5 and 6 that he, named by her as Ralph II, was son and heir of John Basset.  She also states that he married Elizabeth Colville and that they were the parents of Simon II Basset, who was the elder brother of this ralph II.  Finally she stated that John Basset was the son and heir of Simon I Basset.

More importantly she conjectures in a del-reasoned account, that this Ralph II was in fact the son of a Ralph I who was the grandson of Simon I who d, 1226 and m. Elizabeth Avenel.

So the it looks firmly as if the generations here of Ralph II’s ancestors should really be deleted!
