Notes for Lora de St Quintin
m. (1) Robt Grey, (2) Sir John de St Quintin of Brandsburton.
TFPL, Dec 2005: Both C T Clay and CP say that she was the ancestress of the Herbert earls of Pembroke. As yet I can’t see it.
TFPL, later in Dec 2005: The answer is probably that CP’s statement is not quite right. in the St Quintin article in Vol XI, p. 368, note (c), CP says:of the last Herberts St Quintin:
“His s. and h. Herbert fought at Crecy, and d. in May 1347, leaving Elizabeth, aet. 6-7, and Lora, aet. 5, his daughters and heirs. Elizabeth d.s.p. and the descendants or Lora, the Herbert Earls of Pembroke of the 2nd creation (1551), styled themselves Lords St Quintin on the ground of that descent.”
The first earl of this creation married a Parr who was descended from the lords FitzHugh who were indeed Lora’s heirs. So it was the second earl, only, of this second creation that was a descendant of the St Quintins.
