Foster’s Oxford Alumni says his father was William, corroborated by the Mormon extract from the marriage register.
Further there is an entry for a William at Oxford, born c. 1767, matric i Jun 1786, BA 1790, and there was then a rector of Kinglands, Herefords by that name from 1821 to his death in 1848 aged 79.
