Aug 2014, TFPL: Richard Whiting has written in with the interesting suggestion that Mary was in fact Mary Whiting of whom he writes:
“m. 1699 26th February, Thomas Steele.
“1699 Mary's marriage to Thomas Steele of Farnham took place at the Alton
Monthly meeting of the Society of Friends in Church Street being repeated at
the Hampshire Quarterly meeting.
“The couple had moved to Chichester to live by 1740 when the family
inherited a house in Steyning, Sussex, from her brother's widow. Thomas became established in the city as a timber merchant and acquired a substantial number of properties adjacent to St. Pancras church.”
The bmd site <
http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/> confirms the marriage details (for a modest little fee).
