Notes for Colonel Claude Hamilton
In the 1871 census he was aged 9, born in Corfu, at school and living with his mother at 48 Devonshire St, London.

He looks to have died young.  There is a Claude George H who d. in Q2 of 1873 aged 15, but he was only 12 then.  And there is a Claude who d. in Q2 of 1913 aged 55, but he was 51 then.  There is no other Claud on FreeBMD whose death is anywhere as near as these two.

COLONEL C. DE COURCY HAMILTON

We regret to announce the sudden death from heart failure of Colonel Claude de Courcy Hamilton, C. B., which took place on Friday at Broomhouse, Duns Berwickshire.

Colonel Hamilton was a son of Major-General T. de Courcy Hamilton, V.C., and was born in 1861. After being educated at Cheltenham he obtained a commission in the Royal Artillery in 1880. He first saw service in India, in the Lushaie Expedition of 1889, when he was honourably mentioned in the orders of the Governor-General and received the medal with clasp. Three years later he took part in the Isazai Expedition, and for the next five years was Staff captain and D.A.A.G. for Artillery. During this period he accompanied the Tirah Expeditionary Force as brigade-major for Artillery, and for his services was mentioned in despatches.  During the South African War he was employed on the Staff and took part in the operations in Natal, including the actions at Rietfontein and Lombard’s Kop and the defence of Ladysmith. After the relief of this town he served in the Free State and subsequently in the operations round Pretoria. He was twice mentioned in despatches, and in addition to the Queen’s medal with six clasps received a brevet lieutenant-colonelcy.

After serving for some months in 1902 as Military Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief in India, Colonel Hamilton was appointed an A.A.G. at Simla. In 1907 he was placed on half-pay, and 18 months later ill-health caused him to retire, thus bringing to an end a promising career.

Colonel Hamilton married Jeanie, the daughter of the late Mr P.H.Osborne of Currandooley, N.S.W.
