From the Reading Mercury of 2 Nov 1867:

In our obituary of last week will be found the name of Philip Edward Powys, late Lieutenant in Her majesty’s 57th Regiment.  He was the on son of the Rev R T Powys and grandson of the late Philip Lybbe Powys, Esq, who reside on his paternal estates of Hardwick, in this neighbourhood, for upwards of 40 years.  He entered the army in 1860, and sailed with his regiment to New Zealand in 1861, where he received a severe wound in the repulse of the enemy at Gilbert’s Clearing, on the 2nd October, 1863.  He was attacked with inflammation of the lungs in marching his men to Auckland, for embarkation; from the effects of which, accelerated by his wound, he died at Hullavington Vicarage, on the 19th ult., at the early age of 26.  The news of his death was deeply felt by his brother officers, amongst whom he was a great and deserved favourite, having won their esteem by his straightforward and honourable manner, as well as by his truly kind heart and soldier-like qualities.  It was a sad blow to him to find, on consulting a London physician, that he must at once give up his profession, to which he was devotedly attached, and more especially to his regiment.  He had only retired from the army in the beginning of October.  Mr Powys was educated at Marlborough College.
