Notes for Sir Alexander Gilmour Bart
m. Grizel, dau. of Geo Ross, 11th lord Ros of Halehead.
In his “Cochranes of that Ilk” Cockburn-Hood says that he m. (2) Margaret Cockburn, dau. of Sir William Cockburn. The problem here is the the LDS Vital records say that Alexander’s father married a Margaret Cockburn and had a daughter Jean in 1662. There are no records in the LDS Vital records of them having any children, nor have I found any other confirmation of this marriage. The next problem is that his first wife, Grizel Ross did not die until 1730 or so so his marriage to Margaret Cockburn would have taken place soon (he died in 1731 or so) after that. At the time of such a marriage, Margaret the dau. of William Cockburn would have been at least 74 as her father had died in 1656. This does not endear me to the thought that this marriage of these two people actually happened.
