Notes for George Brown
The only real evidence we have is that of his great-grandson, William Brown (later Trotter) who wrote that his father was a "Scotch [sic] Laird near Kilmarnock in Ayrshire".

Additionally RCL P-L refers to Burke's Commoners, Vol III, p.352 which has a George Brown of Knockmarloch marrying an Elizabeth, dau of Robert Sheddon, but I can see no evidence that they had a son John who married Jean Mayne.

Very interestingly Richard Hodgson has come up with this gem::

"I thought this might be of interest, from "Ramble Round Kilmarnock"
Archibald Adamson MDCCCLXXV ?
"'Knockmarloch manor house, [nr Kilmarnock], was a thatch-covered mansion of the olden time, and was last used as a family residence by Major George Brown, a descendant of the Browns of Knockmarloch, a family who had possessed the estate for a hundred and fifty years. About 1800 the estate came into the market and was purchased by Robert Shedden, a relative of the Knockmarloch family, who had spent the years of his boyhood upon it. It is still in the possessions of the Sheddens.'

"Have you see the Burkes LG entry. Does it call George Brown a Major, and does it mention any daughters for him? I am trying to trace a Frances, dau of a Maj George Brown, who married Stephen Lambton in Edinburgh in 1833.
"I suspect Stephen Lambton is the sister of my wife's gg grandmother Caroline Russell nee Lambton, and that they were both illegitimate children of Edward Harbord, 3rd Baron Suffield. As ever, piecing together as many clues as possible can sometimes lead to the final answer..."
