Notes for Cecily de Lucy
m. (1) Walter de Charlcote (et aka), (2), by 1215, Richard Mallory.

The following all comes from Nicholas Vincent’s excellent paper “The lucks of Charlcote” which is almost a model of medieval genealogy, particularly with the appendix of transcriptions of important surviving documents and of those documents that have only survived in Dugdale’e copies.

There is no evidence that Cecilia was the dau. of Reginald, only a surmise from lack of evidence for his brothers.  That she was a Lucy is indicated by her claim in 1214 of a marriage portion at Walkingstead, Godstone, Surrey; at least some of this land had been held in the 1190s by Reginald de Lucy.  While Walter de Charlcote could have bought it, it was more likely that Cecily inherited it from a related Lucy, possibly as a maritagium.

Having drawn a descendant tree of her supposed consequent descent from Richard Lucy the justiciar, there are two Lucy granddaughters of Richard the justiciar.  One was Juliane who married Thurstan the son of Aimer which Aymer was brother  to Walter de Charlcots.  The other granddaughter, Cecily, apparently married Aymer’s brother, Walter.

The marriage of Cecily to Walter is odd.  However Cecily survived Walter, died c. 1203, married again and had children with her second husband, died by 1220, whom she survived as well.  So it is likely Cecily was young when married and she may have been significantly younger than her husband Walter, making this apparent cross-generation marriage more plausible.

The other consideration is that she was a daughter of Richard the justiciar.

All it needs is a little more evidence, so far unfound by many very competent scholars.  I reckon this will remain one of life’s little mysteries.
