Notes for Sir William I Berkeley Marquess of Berkeley
Smyth: 'Willm the wast all'. Alienated all the Berkeley estates. Was created viscount Berkeley, then earl of Nottingham and finally marquess.  Smyth called him William lord Berkeley, the first of that name.

Smyth wrote of him that it might be said that he was a causeless repudiator of his first wife, an unnatural contender with his own father, a shedder of innocent blod in the time of peace, an irreconcilable hater of his brother and heir, a disinheritor of his race and family, a consumer of the four baronies of Berkeley, Mowbray, Segrave and Bedford, and of half the dukedom of Norfolk, a man above measure ambitious, a frequent leader of ungracious multitudes in night rallies and dignities above all his predecessors.

But I wonder if his mind was cast by the depredations of the Warwicks and the need to eestablish the family to regain their estates?
