Major Kingsmill quotes Nichols' description:
"Highclere church ... a large and stately monument ... the effigy with hands in prayer is habited in ruff with a judicial dress and cap.  The head rests on a cushion, behind which are small kneeling figures, one of a male in armour, and a female in the habit of the times, in all probability intended for Sir Thomas Lucy and his wife.  Below are the figures of 6 sons and 4 daughters all kneeling in prayer.  The monument which was originally well gilt and painted, is surmounted by the crest and arms of Kingsmill viz. arg, semée of cross-crosslets fitchy sable, a chevron ermines between 3 mill rinds of the 2nd, a chief ermines: crest a cubit arm arect, vested, argent, cuffed ermines hand proper holding millrind sable.
"On dexter side is a shield bearing Kingsmill, impaling, sable... 3 falcons argent (Falconer)
"On sinister side is a similar shiled bearing gules, semée of cross-crosslets, 3 lucies haurient, or, (Lucy) impaling Kingsmill."

There are two inscriptions on the monument.  One is a latin eulogy of "Ricardus Kingsmill, armiger eximus", the other, an English epitaph, still informs us that:

"Here lies buried the body of Richard Kingsmill Esqre. the second sonne of Sir John Kingsmill of Sidemountaine, Knight.  A most worthy professor in the common Laws of this realm.  First Attorney afterwards Surveyor of the Ma.ts Courts of Wards and Liveries.  Which offices he executed very prudently uprightly and faithfully ye whole tearme of 25 years.  For his pietie, justice, courtesie and Hospitalitie, a memorable pattern to posteritie.
