WILL OF EDWARD WELLS OF WALLINGFORD 1792

In the name of God Amen.   I EDWARD WELLS the Elder of Wallingford in the County of Berks, Gentleman do make and ordain this my last will and testament in writing in manner and form following.

That is to say In Primus, I give, devise and bequeath unto my son EDWARD WELLS the Younger all and singular my freehold messuages and tenanments and premises with their and every of their appoirtaments, situate lying and being in Wallingford aforesaid, to hold unto my son EDWARD WELLS the Ypunger and his assigns and heirs forever, from and immediately after my decease.

Then I give and bequeath to my son EDWARD WELLS the Younger all and singular any leasehold messuages and tenenments, brewhouses and premises with their and every of their apportaments, situate lying and being in  Wallingford aforesaid to hold unto my said son EDWARD WELLS the Younger his executors, administrators and assigns, from and immediately after my decease, for and during all such ---- estate and interest on  ------ estates or interest which  I shall then have therein with all such benefit of renewal and doth or shall in any ways belong unto me, subject to the payment of rent and performance of the covenants and the said several indentures of lease, received and contained on the lessees part and behalf to be paid and performed.

ITEM I give devise and bequeath unto my said son EDWARD WELLS the Younger all and every  of my copyhold messuages, lands, tenenments and premises, situate, lying and being in theparish of Brightwell in the said County of Berks, with their and every of their apportaments. To hold unto my said son EDWARD WELLS, the Younger and to his heirs and assigns forever, from and immediately after my decease according to the custom of the Manor of Brightwell aforesaid

ITEM I give and bequeath to my daughters ANN GREENWOOD widow, MARY DEAN wife of GEORGE DEAN of the City of London, cutleer, and ELIZABETH PARKER wife of FRANCIS PARKER of Wallingford aforesaid. woolstapler, the legacy or sum of one thousand pounds a piece of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid unto yhem respectively  by my executor, hereinafter named, out of my personal estate in manner following.  That is to say five hundred pounds a piece within one year next after my decease and the remaining five hundred pounds a piece within two years next after my decease.  But my will and meaning is that if any of my said three daughters shall happen to die before the whole of them, the other two legacies shall be fully paid and satisfied.

ITEM I do hereby order and direct that so much of the legacies that shall remain unpaid at the time of the decease of any of my said daughters shall go and be paid into the custody of the children equally of such daughter or daughters dying.I

ITEM I give and bequeath to Mr CRATO of All Manbury(?) postern in the City of London, printer the legacy or sum of £50 of lawful money to be paid to him  within one year next after my decease, by my executor, hereinafter named.

And lastly all the rest and remainder of my goods, cattle, chattels, ready money, debts owing and all of my personal estate whatsoever by me given and disposed of my debts, legacies, funeral and testament expences being paid and discharged, I give and bequeath to my said son EDWARD WELLS the Younger, who I do make and ordain full and sole executor of this my last will and testament, revoking all former wills by me made either by word or writing and declaring this to be my last will only.

In witness thereof I have to this my will written on two sheets of paper,toeach set this my hand and seal.  25/Fen/1792.

In small writing around the edge of the will is an addenda added in 1855 when a one hundred year indenture had matured. By that time Edward Wells the younger had died and the benefactors were his sons Edward and Job Wells.
