Notes for Capt Albert Praed Hallifax
Of Halwell House, South Pool, Devon where he was the last lord of the manor.

Albert also had a grandson John Froude, but I do not know the line to him (probably via a daughter from the obit below).  John died in WW1 at the age of 16.

Here's Albert's obit and a related report from the Kingsbridge Gazette (Hants?):

The funeral of Capt Hallifax took place at South Pool on Monday afternoon amid universal manifestation of regard and respect.  The Rector W R H Arundell conducted the impressive service in the parish church and also read the committal sentences at the graveside,  The chief mourners were G A H Hallifax (son) and Mr A A Froude CMG, JP(son in law).  Among others present were A F Holdsworth JP,CC, Mr J Holdsworth, Col Earle JP, Maj W Roper-Caldbeck, Rev w D Pitman, JP,CC and others, Messrs B N O Prettejohn, JDO Prettejohn, W H Fairweather, J Lizard, J Fitz, C Jarvis, J Hewitt Snr, J Hewitt Jnr, R Sawtell, C P Giles, W J Luscombe, G Cole, G S Chase, Jas Ford, p Ford and practically the whole of the inhabitants of South Pool.  The following 8 tenants acted as bearers: Messrs A Horsman, G F Ford, S Elliott, H Elliott, R White, Jno Luscombe (2) and A Patey.  Among the beautiful floral tributes were those from the widow, 'Gardie and Gerald', Charlie Hallifax, Charlie Deacon, Muriel and Guy Ferrano.  the meet of the South Pool Harriers arranged for Monday was postponed until the following day on account of his death.

Mr Mildmay at South Pool.

There was a large attendance at South Pool School on Saturday evening when Mr Mildmay MP who was accompanied by  Mrs Mildmay addressed his constituents.

Maj W Roper-Caldbeck, who presided, said that the Angel of Death had cast his wings over the community and their old friend and landlord Capt Hallifax had been called to his last rest.  Under these circumstances, his son Mr Gerald Hallifax had had to forego the pleasure of presiding over their deliberations and of welcoming to South Pool both by his presence and words their tried an trusted MP Mr Mildmay.  Under less urgent circumstances that meeting would have been abandoned but it was felt that it would be extremely difficult to notify the change to all the electors and also owing to the nearness of the election and the vital issues at stake, it was held impossible to make their arrangements more in accordance with their sentiments.

Mr Mildmay, who was very cordially received, said it was a deep sadness to him, as it must be to everyone of them, that they had lost their true and trusted friend, Capt Hallifax.  Personally, he would never forget his constant kindnesses to him, and his readiness to help others at the sacrifice of any time and trouble.  He would never forget Capt Hallifax's unselfishness.  They knew how when hard times came to him, he sacrificed his own happiness and left Halwell.  By depriving himself of his own pleasure, he economised so that he might still keep up the repairs of the farms and cottages on the Estate in order that no man- no family on the estate- might suffer.  Capt Hallifax had set a splendid example, which would keep his memory green for many a day to come.  He (Mr Mildmay strongly felt that in the presence of death, their political differences would be stilled and under the circumstances he would not wish to hold an ordinary political meeting.  He thought they would all agree that it was desirable that they should pass a vote of deepest sympathy with the family and asked them to endorse this by standing up in their places.  Afterwards he would have a quiet talk with them about other matters.  He was particularly anxious at such a moment nothing should be done to accentuate political differences.

The meeting unanimously accepted the vote of sympathy which Mr Mildmay said he would convey to the family in manner suggested.

He went on to visit Sherford.

In the 1881 census, his name was ‘A P Halifax’ and he was aged 49 and b. in Exeter, Devon; he was living with his family including a son and a dau at Hallwell, South Pool, Devon.  They had seven living-in servants, including a governess who was presumably for the two children.

His birth date is a bit of a mystery.  There is:

1881 census, where he is said to be 49, thus born c. 1832
His death record on FreeBMD where he is said to be 69 in 1910, thus born c. 1841
His birth record on FreeBMD where Albert Praed was clearly b. in Q1 of 1841

I think the 1881 census age is rubbish and that he was born in 1841.
