Notes for Frances Garrard
1665 was the date of her dau's marriage.

From her (presumed) mother's marriage, she must have been born between 1612 (as the first-born) and 1632, when her mother died.  This would make her anything from 33 to 53 when her daughter married.  All very reasonable and supports the decision that she is the daughter of the first J.G. bart.

BUT she is not in the 1572 & 1634 visitation of Herts, though she may be in the probably as yet unpublished one of 1669.

TFPL, Oct 2003: Boyd's "Inhabitants of London" has entries for three John Garrards:
(a) 14087, Sir John, b. 1546, m. Jane Partidge (she d. 1611), d. 1625
(b) 14480, Sir John, m. Eliz. Barkham in 1611 (she was b. 1593 and d. 1632)
(c) 14481, Sir John, m. 1636 Jane Lombard (she d. 1692), d. 1686

Further in the second of these, there is included a dau, possibly the fifth, called Frances; her slightly elder sister Margaret, 4th dau., is recorded as marrying in 1646, which is plausible for Frances' supposed marriage in 1647.  However the marriage licence says that Frances' mother consented to her marriage while the above says that her mother died in 1632, corroborated elsewhere.

On the other hand, Frances could not have married in 1647 if she had been the dau of (c) who m. in 1636, as this would have made her only 10 years old at marriage, which conflicts with her marriage licence age of 16.

This leads me to wonder whether she had been a dau. of the baronet family at all or whether someone else (a stepmother, even?) was acting as her "mother" at the time of her marriage.  But it still seems, on date grounds, reasonable to put her as the daughter of the first baronet and Elizabeth Barkham.  Lots to follow up.

Nov 2004, TFPL: All issues resolved.  Volume II of that inclredible series Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica has 15 pages of the Lambarde Diary, kept from 1504 to 1798 by successive members of the family.  On page 104 of this volume are these words:

"Old Sr Jn father to ye above named Sr John Garrard had by hs wife Elizabether, daughter of Sr Edward Barkham ....  Frances Crosse another of his daughters baptised Nouember ye 28th 1626 ... as may appeare by the church booke at Wethamsted in Hartfordshire as sent by Ben. Peter ...  Ita est W. L. [William Lambard]"

Other exceprts of this diary show that the Lambards remained friendly with the Twysdens for many years, that Frances Croosse née Garrard lived at least to 1706 and the she had a son William, Godson to Thomas Lambard, who died on 23rd April 1653, probbaly no more than 5 years old.  It also sounded as if Wm Crosse the elder outlived his son Josias at least until 1654, Josias being referred to by Thomas Lombard as his brother-in-law.

All very interesting and satisfactory!
