Notes for John Barrington
Visitation of Essex 1612 - Harleian MS

From Mark Noble's "Memoirs of the persons and families who by females are allied to or descended from the protectorate-House of Cromwell" pub in 1784:

"John Barrington, esq. one of the gentlemen of the protector Oliver's bedchamber, member of parlement for Dunwich, in 1658, 1659 and in 1660 : at the restoration he left Britain, and retired to Germany, where he served in the army.  [This does not agree well with the Letters to the Barrington Family which has him dying in 1631 - TFPL]

"One of the sons of sir John Barrington bart, I apprehend, was major Barrington, who was majopr Barrington, who was displaced from his commission by colonel sir Charles Coote, for the murmurings at sir Charles's making his three brothers and his cousin sir George Coote, colonels : sir Charles, at any other time, would have been inexcusable; but the times demanded such only to be trusted, who could be entirely depended upon : however, it was the greater hardship as major Barrington was also anxious to have his royal master restored ; and he was treated by sir Charles with great severity, by the freeness of his reprimands, as well as by depriving him of his post."

[Could this have been the John Barrington who married Elizabeth Hawkins and was the father of the 6th baronet and his successors?  Sounds more likely and confirms a plaque in Dunwich museum that says a Barrington was MP of that pocket borough. - TFPL, 21.12.98]
