Notes for Ralph FitzRandolf Lord of Middleham
His pedigree is probably from the history of the foundation of Coverham Abbey, quoted by Dugdale, Mon, vol vi, pp 920-921. CP gives the comment "... appears more authentic than is often the case with such accounts."
Swallow in his "De Nova Villa", pub 1885 writes: that Robert Nevill married Mary, sole [sic, though possibly "eventual sole"] heiress of Ralph Fitz-Ranulf, Lord of Middleham. She stood in the fifth descent from Ribald, Lord of Middleham, younger brother of Alan, Earl of Richmond and son of Eudo, Earl of Bretagne." By this the Nevilles claimed a quartering of the arms of the dukes of Brittany with the simplest blazon of 'ermine'. I'm not convinced.
