From the info on HMS Hurworth:

HMS Hurworth: Ship's Sponsor

Admiral Sir David Halifax KCB, KCVO, KBE

HMS Hurworth's Sponsor

Every Royal Navy Warship has a Sponsor who has personal ties with the ship throughout her Commission. Whilst the ship's company may change every few years our Sponsor is our one constant and Lady Hallifax maintains a very close interest in the ship's activities. Lady Anne Hallifax, wife of Admiral Sir David Hallifax KCB, KCVO,KBE, launched Hurworth at a spectacular ceremony on Tyneside in 1985 marking the beginning of Hurworth's career and our affiliation with Lady Hallifax. Our Sponsorship also helps maintain the link with the Service that Lady Hallifax's husband served with such distinction. Sadly Admiral Hallifax died in 1992 following his battle against motor neurone disease but he is remembered fondly as an outstanding Naval Officer:

Admiral Hallifax's Naval career spanned some 42 years from the Second World War to the Falklands Conflict. He was from a distinguished Naval family; his father, Vice Admiral R H C Hallifax, was serving in the Middle East when he tragically died in a plane crash whilst returning on leave. David Hallifax joined Dartmouth as a Cadet in 1945 and spent his early years in minesweepers based in the eastern Mediterranean. His first Command was as a young Lieutenant in the fast patrol boat MTB5008.

In 1954 he qualified as a Torpedo & Anti-Submarine Officer serving in HMS Salerno during the Suez Crisis in 1956 and later in HMS Whirlwind in the West Indies. He also Commanded the destroyer HMS Agincourt at home and in the Far East before taking Command of HMS Fife in 1973. Following an appointment to the MoD as Director of Naval Operational Requirements, he became Flag Officer First Flotilla, a position once held by his father. It was from here that he went to the Northwood Headquarters as Chief of Staff to Admiral Sir John Fieldhouse, Commander-in-Chief Fleet.

As Chief of Staff he was responsible for the day-to-day control of the Headquarters but as importantly, he became a reassuring voice to the hard-pressed commanders of the British Task Force during the Falklands Conflict. Admiral Hallifax worked with great industry, he was robust and retained the ability to laugh at himself. Above all he could remain apparently unmoved when things went wrong. Together with Rear Admiral "Sandy" Woodward, they executed one of the most remarkable Joint Operations of its time. The two men, who knew each other well, would talk for hours on a secure satellite link discussing the events of the day, future plans and rules of engagement. In return, Admiral Hallifax would update Admiral Woodward on 'events back home' in the HQ, give high level guidance as for the first time, deployed fighting Admirals had 'real time' contact with their Operational Superior. Admiral Hallifax retired from the Navy in 1987 having completed further senior appointments to the MoD, NATO and the Royal College of Defence Studies.

In 1988 he was made Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle acting as the Queen's Representative for the area. In recognition of his services, Her Majesty visited Sir David at his quarters in Windsor in 1991 to bestow on him his third knighthood, that of KCVO.

He was a keen yachtsman, guitarist and an avid supporter of St Georges Chapel, Windsor. Admiral Hallifax was a man of courage, honour and great humility, characteristics that are as important today as they were in the post war years or the difficult days of the Falklands conflict. He was an outstanding Naval Officer, an example to us all and it is an honour for Hurworth to be associated with his memory.
