In the 1901 census he was at school somewhere in Hampshire (the precise place is on another, unseen, census sheet), aged 13 and born in Morland in Cumberland.
On 1.1.1916 he was awarded the M.I.D. decoration while a captain in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps.
Later on in WW1 he had gained DSO, MC, the British 1915 Star, and the British Victory Star. He had been in France in 1914-15 (and probably later too). He started as Lieut, promoted to Capt and was temporary Lt/Col. From TNA, Cat ref WO/372/7, Image Ref 10226.
