Notes for Rev Thomas Powys
Martin P-L writes:
Rev. Thomas, vicar of Stone, nr. Dartford, Kent, lived 1565-1607, eldest son of above.
1581 attended All Souls College (Oxon lists).
The church of Stone survives, built by the same masons as built Westminster Abbey. Splendid chancel. Key available in rectory.
His will survives (PRO fo.53, 1607). From it we know that he owned property in Abingdon, which he left to his three sisters, Katherine, Joan and Margaret, except for an orchard left to Robert Powys, his "cousin". In the legal language of the time, cousin should mean "next of kin", so Robert may have been another child, like Margaret, not mentioned in the registers. Otherwise he must have been his actual cousin, Robert son of Snitton - though there is no other evidence that these two branches of the family were in contact. Margaret was married to a Dr Hovenden, Warden and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, from whom the Rev. Thomas leased a meadow called Aston's Eight.
