1765 Whitchurch Baptism Register:
"1765 May 4 POWYS Philip-Lybbe s. Philip Lybbe Esqre & Caroline"
1783 spent 6 months at Lochee's Academy. General Conway gave him a commission as a cornet in the 50th Foot.
1785 Sub-brigadier and cornet in 2nd troop of Horse Guards.
1790 married, by his uncle the Dean, to Louisa Michell, second daughter and co-heiress of Richard Michell of Culham Court, Berks, and North Audley Street, London, and of Broomfield House, Middx.
1791-1805 they had five children.
1792 moved to Hardwick (which his parents had let).
1799 Clerk of Exchequer (whatever that means)
1800 with Louisa, involved in a suit, Chan. Pro. 697/1 (which I have not investigated)
1814 ff expecting to have to sell all his property, it seems, to pay debts. All the younger children would divide the residue, the eldest getting Broomfield.
1818 High Sheriff of Oxon (like his grandfather)
Whitchurch Burial Register:
"1838 Mar 17 POWYS Philip Lybbe, 72, of Hardwick House"
Louisa (I think) made a coverlet that is now in the Brighton Pavilion.
Broomfield House originally belonged to the Jackson family, in about 1700. A Thomas Jackson married a Miss Tash and had three daughters. One of them (taking Broomfield with her) married back into the Tash family. Their daughter, Elizabeth, married a Michell, whose grand-daughter Louisa married Philip, and left Broomfield to her son.
The house is a large one, with its own park, situated in N.W. London off Powys Lane (presumably named after our family). The estate was sold by Reginald Cecil. It now belongs to the local council, Enfield, who have built a sports ground and tennis courts in the park. The house when I saw it (in the early sixties) was a half-hearted museum. I see that it is still labelled as such on my map of London, but I have also heard that it was burnt down.
In 1808, living at Wargrave, Berks - Alumni Oxoniensis.

In the London Kalendar for 1800, there is a list of the The Honourable Band of GENTLEMEN-PENSIONERS (est 1509) which includes:
“Philip Lybbe Powys, jun. esq Clerk of the Cheque, 120l”
Sounds like him as his father was still alive then.
In 1799 The new Annual Register reported for May 14th:
‘Philip Lybbe Powys, jun., es. appointed clerk of the cheque to the band of gentlemen pensionser, vice Hayward resigned.’

In her diaries on 27 April 1802, Caroline Powys wrote: our Son Philip Birth day born 1765. [This contrasts with other records that say he was born on 22 April 1765.]

TFPL, Oct 2011: In the 1789 Army List he is a Lieutenant in the Second Regt of Life-Guards with a regimental appointment date of 25 Jun 1783 and an Army appointment date of 31 May 1786.

“March 11, in his 73rd year, deeply lamented by his family and sincerely respected by his friends and neighbours, Philip Lybbe Powys Esq, of hardwick House, in the country of Oxford.”

The Reading Mercury of 20 Feb 1790 confirms the date and place of this marriage.

The entry in the Parish Register of St George’s church, Hanover Square reads as follows:
“Philip Lybbe Powys Esqr: and Louisa Michell both of this Parish were married in this Church by Licence this Eighteenth day of February in the year 1790 by me, [signed] Thos Powys Rector of Fawley Bucks
This marriage was Solemnised between us: [signed] P L: Powys junr, Lousa Michell
In the presence of [signed] Thos Lockwood, Elizabeth Noyes.”
Thomas Powys was the bridegroom’s uncle.
