Notes for Sir Robert Poyntz
Refer to Sir John Maclean's memoirs of the Poyntz Family in the British Museum Library. Knighted at the battle of Bosworth Field on 22 Aug 1485. Chancellor and Privy Councillor to Catherine of Aragon. DoNB: "From a brother was descended the Poyntz family of Essex and from his, Robert's, second son John, father of Robert Poyntz, the family of Alderley, Glos." He was a knight in the queen's retinue at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520. ______________________________________ The 1564 Devon Vis'n says that he had a dau. Mary who m. an Edward Gorges; the Gorges were a Somerset family of which one branch seems to have moved to Devon. However Maclean's Memoirs of the Family of Poyntz places Mary as the dau. of Robert's son Anthony (p.95). The dates tend to confirm Maclean's account. ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________
