Notes for Isabella FitzRoy
Smith in his Lives of the Berkeleys dismisses an old theory that Isabella was the dau. of Edmund earl of Cornwall or of his father Richard king of Allemagne, son of K. John and instead says she was the daughter of Maurice de Credonia. However CP, though it animadverts the former, gives this latterno attention and declares firmly the parentage shown. However Smith does quote a rhyme (Vol 1, p. 145) by Robert of Gloucester in the time of Henry 6th - and then disbuses it - which modern views now and explicitly endorse: Sr Richard le fitz'roy, of whom spoke before, Gent'leman he was enough, though he was last I bore, For the Earles daughter of warren his good moder was, And his Fader king John, that begat a purcas, Sr Maurice of Berkeley wedded such by cas, His daughter, and begat on her the good Kt Sr Thomas. Smyth then (deliberately?) confuses this man with Richrd king of the Allemaines, third son of King John and not unnaturally is able to refute such a proposal.
