Notes for Sir Nicholas Saunders
Matriculated 1587 Balliol. Inner Temple 1583. In a codicil of Sir Francis Carew's will of 1610, d.1611, he left £300 to his nephew, Sir Nicholas Sander. The use of the word "nephew" indicates that he considered Sir Nich to be the son of his, Sir Francis', sister Isabel. Sir Francis also left £20 each to his nephews Henry Sanders and Arthur Darcys. _____________________________________________ The pedigree of Sir Nicholas, including the earlier Carew descent, is taken from Michael L Walker's article in Surrey Archaelogical Collections in March, or so, 1956 under the title "The Manor of Batailles and the Family of Saunder in Ewell during the 16th and 17th centuries" published by Surrey Archaeological Society. The tree included in this agrees precisely with the wills of the Sanders family in my possession, whereas the tree drawn by Culleton for my grandfather in 1912 does not so agree; doubtless Michael Walker had other information to flesh out his interpretation. Michael Walker is explicit that Isabel Carew is the mother of Sir Nicholas Sander. Owner of Bataille Manor. _____________________________________________ Arms: Sable, a chevron ermine between three bulls' heads caboshed argent Crest: A demi-bull gules, armed or Motto: Non Bos in Lingua.
