CP, Vol VII, p. 532, note (h) explains that her parentage is not known, contrary to the assertion by College of Arms.. She was indeed great-granddaughter of Hugh de Grantmesnil, the Domesday tenant but she was not the daughter of his English grandson Hugh. Instead she has to be the daughter of the Norman branch from her gt-grandfather, which was inherited by his eldest son Robert. Possibly her father was Robert, son of Hugh, son of Robert, son of Hugh - but this has one too many generations!
Anyhow I have left in the Hugh de Grantmesnil as her father, as the bearer of the arms the College said we could, justifiably, inherit.
March 2002: Domesday People has a long article on the Grantmesnils and solves the above problem, so I have altered the naming. |
