Notes for Rev John Erskine (Campbell) Colquhoun
No evidence found for his baptism. But it must have happened at some stage for him to have become a clergyman.
This leaves us with the issue of identifying him as the son of his parents.
The documentary evidence is:
(a) His presence in their parents house in the 1841 census,
(b) that he was named as the brother and executor of the elder son, Archibald Campbell Colquhoun in the probate for the latter in 1872,
(c) that he was buried beside his parents and acknowledged on an inscription for him and his wife on his parents’ gravestone after his death in 1917.
(d) One of his children was given the second forename of Powys, in memory of his mother.
This evidence is irrefutable in my view.

The challenge now is to find the evidence to prove, amend if needed and extend if feasible what Burke asserts above.

In 1841 he was with his parents and brother Archibald at Heath, Putney, Wandsworth, London, aged 10 and reported to have been born in Scotland.
In 1851 he was a law student at Edinburgh boarding with the Rector of the Edinburgh Academy, aged 19 and born in 1832 in East Killermint, Dunbartonshire, [ Scotland ].
In 1861 he was not found.
In 1871 he and his wife Emily and four children were at Southwold with a mere six live-in servants:

In 1881 he, his wife, all his daughters and 14 live-in servants were at Chartwell, Westerham, Sevenoaks. But FindMyPast have not bothered to make a transcription so I am providing an abstract only for the family members:

So far I cannot find the 1911 census which means that Emily Agnes’ information on births and survivors of her children is not available.
But it was found and with the name of Colguhoun, a ‘g’ in pace of the ‘q’. I’ve told FindMyPast.
Emily, and John, said they had been married for 47 years and had ten children of whom two had died and 8 then survived.
The family, only, were:
