My view is the the initials are the things to watch. So I would eliminate the first and speculate on the second. Order the marriage cert for the second is the answer. I agree the second is a bit late in life but not too late.
However FindMYPast also shows the birth of a Michael J Stopford in Manchester in 1945, which implies that it was a different Michael J in the Trafford marriage. Let it wait and see what else turns up.

Just to confuse matters, in 2002 there were a Michael J and Valerie Stopford living in Watford, according to the electoral rolls.
It is not going to be easy or cheap to sort out if he had a family and offspring.
His father’s will has been no help in deciding what wife he might have had.
