1915, 14 September:  

   His Majesty The KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the appointment of the
   undermentioned Officers to be Companionsof the Distinguished Service Order, in
   recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field:—

   . . .

   Captain Lionel Charles Stopford Sackville, 4th Battalion,
   The Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own).
            
   For conspicuous gallantry and ability since he obtained command of a company
   in February, 1915.  Near Ypres, from 8th to 15th May, he did excellent work
   in the trenches, keeping up his man’s spirits under very heavy bombardments.  
   He took command of another company in addition to his own when it had lost
   all its officers.  On the night of 14th/15th March, near St Eloi, he took a
   barricade with half his company, went forward by himslef to reconnoitre, and
   then, returning for his company, led them back and cleared the houses on the
   road.

1919, 21 July: . . . Brevet Major Lionel Charles Stopford-Sackville, D.S.O., Rifle Brigade.
    Permission to wear the medal of The Croix de Guerre.
