There is a Arthur J MacLean who died in Q2 of 1916, registered in Steyning, Sussex.  Could be him.  Now for a few censuses.

In the 1861 census he was three years old and at home.
In 1871, he was not at home.
In 1881, 1891 and 1901 he was not found.

In 1911 this looks like him, with the Paddington birth place, living at Norton Vicarage Gloucester, Norton, Gloucestershire:

In 1884 an Arthur James Maclean was awarded BA in Oxford, of St Johns.

On 21 Dec 1885 the Gloucestershire Echo reported amongst those ordained in Bristol Cathedral were … PRIESTS: Arthur James Maclean B.A., St John’s College, Oxford and that of those subsequently licensed as curates were … Rev A.J. Maclean, to Tewkesbury.

ON 27 Aug 1887 the Gloucester citizen reported that The Rev Arthur James Maclean was to be acting Cchaplain of the Yeomanry Cavalry, Gloucestershire.

On 18 October 1907 the Gloucester Citizen reported that the New Vicar of Norton was to be the Rev Arthur James Maclean MA and said::

  “The new vicar was educated at St John’s College, Oxford, taking his B.A. degree in 1884 and his M.A. in 1887.  He went to Leeds Clergy School in 1884, and was ordained deacon in 1884 and priest in 1885 by the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol.  He was a curate at Tewkesbury from 1884 to 1890, rector of St Peter’s Gympie, Queensland 1891-94; rector of Micheldean, Glos, 1895-96, vicar of Haresfield, Glos., 1896-99, and rector of All Saints Brisbane, 1899-1902.”

In 1916, following his death and on presentation of a death certificate, some GWR shares in the names of Rev Arthur James Maclean and three others were transferred to the remaining names.

I would conclude that it was him that died in 1916 and that he had been a clergyman..  There is no sign of any marriage and I think he was unmarried and had no children.
