I suspect that he had invited his nephew to join them and inherit his estate.  Note that the nephew’s children were mostly born at Rise.  The conclusion is that he and mary might not have had any children.

In 1861 his nephew and children were still with him.

With the large income to support this styple, I wonder if his family was in Burke’s Landed gents?  Yes he was!

In Burke’s LG of 1871, vol 1, p. 93, there is:

Richard Bethell, Esq. of Rise and Walton Abbey, co. York, late MP for the E.R., b. 10 May 1772; m. 26 April 1800, Mary, 2nd dau. of William Wellbank [sic], Esq. of the city of London. Mr Bethell s. to the estates under the will of the late Williamd Bethell, Esq.  He d.s.p. 25 Dec 1864, and was s. by his nephew, the present William Bethell, Esq.
