Notes for Walter Arden
Walter and Eleanor had sons John, Thomas, Martyn, Robert, Henry and William, John being the eldest.
Charlotte Stopes in her well-researched book “Shakespeare’s Family”, pub 1901, reports some difficulty in establishing what happened to Walter’s son Thomas. The best evidence she found was in various arms born by Arden descendants. Anyhow it seems likely that Thomas the son of Walter somehow acquired a substantial property, Wilmecote, at Aston Cantlow and certainly this landowner was the father of a Robert Arden who was the father of Mary, shakespeare’s mother, who married one John Shakespeare, Shakespeare’s father. Because if the unclarity of this line of descent, I am unable to insert it into this database. It may be that later research had made it more clear, time will tell.
