This young Platoon Commander has, over the past six months, been constantly leading patrols deep into enemy territory both by day and night. This was particularly so during the period Dec 1951 - March 1952, when the battalion was located WEST of R. SAMLOKEN.
While leading recce, as well as fighting patrols, he has on many occasions made contact with the enemy, and has quite a few times been involved in sharp engagements from which he has emerged with considerable credit to himself.
On an occasion in December 1951 he was commanding his platoon during an operation in which his company were carrying our a raid on a hill feature named Pt 169, MR OT 106120. During the attacks which the enemy launched on the company that night he set a splendid example to his men of coolness under fire. Later a number of enemy got behind the company and out of their route of withdrawal. 2/Lieut POWYS, armed with a rifle, and accompanied by a LMG group set off to deal with the situation. This he did most successfully, killing two of the enemy himself, and clearing the remainder away so that the company withdrawal route was opened up once again. This was most fortuitous as enemy mortaring and shelling had caused casualties and the wounded were able to be evacuated without interference.
2/Lieut POWYS led several daylight patrols on to his 169 MR CT 106120. This hill was under enemy observation and was occuied by the enemy at night, while a patrol from the battalion re-occupied it by day. The re-occupation by daylight was always hazardous as there was no approach other that up the very steep northern slope, and there were no guarantees, until the patrol reached the top, that the enemy had evacuated it after the previous night.
On all these occasions 2/Lieut POWYS displayed a high degree of courage and initiative. He led his men skilfully and with great determination. His personal courage, his quick grasp of a situation and his sound judgement were an inspiration and fine example to the men he led.
