Anne Beirne, a descendant of Bryan’s eldest daughter Edith, has discovered that Bryan’s grandfather, another Bryan, was the son of William Mackey and an unknown Jamaican woman. Apparently an act of the Jamaican Parliament was passed to give the rights of an Englishman to the first Bryan and described him as a ‘quadroon’, a quarter black. That made this Bryan a sixteenth black.
