In 1901 he was with the wife Charlotte of his uncle Thomas Bartholomew, which Thomas had died and Charlotte remarried Frank Cruston. All this remained at the White Lion Inn, Newmarket, where John had lived for the past 15 years or so, all his waking life as he was only 16 at the time of the census.
Not found in 1911. Abroad? At Sea? Who knows?

In 1942 an Ordinary Seaman, John L Bartholomew died at sea; war deaths 1938-1948, vol 1, p. 311. He would have been 59 then so it might be him but it sounds a bit old.
