________________
He was unmarried in 1881 and was married in 1891, both above; in a search for all marriages between a Thomas Bartholomew and a Charlotte, this was the only one I could find:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1887 (>99%)
BARTHOLOMEW Thomas Lambeth 1d 668
Calaz Simeon Lambeth 1d 668
HORLOCK Emma Lambeth 1d 668
RANSON Charlotte Ann Lambeth 1d 668
I am not convinced by it.
And I can identify no births of a John in the area of Newmarket, though there was this in Swaffham:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Jun 1883 (>99%)
BARTHOLOMEW John Langriah B Swaffham 4b 399
And he turned out to be the son of Thomas’ brother William who had died in 1876 and was indeed the grandson of Matilda. (QV)

But in the 1901 census, John was living with Frank and Ann Cruxton at the White lion Inn and was described as nephew born in Swaffham.
Frank Cruxton had married Charlotte Ann Bartholomew in 1898 in Newmarket. So it looks like the answer is to get hold of John’s birth certificate to establish who his mother and father was.
