In the London Gazette of 1 August 1930 he was promoted from Act Sub-Lieut to Sub-Lieut w.e.f. 16 Oct 1929.

In the London Gazette of 26 February 1932 he was promoted from Sub-Lieut to Lt w.e.f. 16 Feb 1932 (p. 1295).

In the London Gazette of 1 April 1932 he was appointed Lieut from sub-lieut in RN, w.e.f 1 Dec 1931.

In the London Gazette of 8 March 1940, p. 1391, he was promoted from Lieut to Lieut-Comdr w.e.f. 1 Feb 1940.

In a web report for a Lt G H Goodman, RNVR, is written “GC awarded  for great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty. De-fuzed an Italian circling torpedo on beach 11 miles east of Alexandria on 15 Jan 42 after one had killed the Torpedo Officer of HMS Medway (Lt Cdr J G S Cunningham RN - uncle of MCDOA member Tim Trounson) on 23 Sep 1940.”

On another site of Naval events of WW2 for Monday 23 Sept 1940, “While examining an Italian torpedo found ashore six miles west of Agami, the Torpedo Officer Lt Cdr J. G. S. Cunningham, Gunner (T) E. G. Lee, and two ratings of depot ship MEDWAY were killed when the torpedo exploded.”
