Notes for Sir John Somerville
Possibly he is the John who m. Eliz Carmichael and he died at Flodden. If so, he is in SP and his father was 2nd lord Somerville. But this account in SP shows some children for him but these do NOT include Helen. Alternatively Helen was the granddaughter of this Sir John Somerville, being the daughter of his son John Somerville of Cambusnethan but who was not a knight.
Note 15 on p. 14 of vol 8 of SP says that there are claims that Helen was indeed a daughter of Sir John Somerville, son of 2nd Lord, but “there is no corroborative authority for these”. But at least this identifies which John Somerville is being talked about as the father of Helen.
I have ordered a copy of “Memorie of Somerville” in the hope that this will give the necessary detail to identify her father further and to find more ancestors.
