_______________
From A2A, Yorks Arch Soc has several documents with William as a witness, or other ‘de Nottons’. Possibly one of these might have his seal?
_______________
From Farrers Close Rolles, his parents were Gilbert de Notton and Margery de Elland. (See my Notes for his mother-in-law, Edith de Barton.)
Arms Generally notes for William de Notton
Arms unknown.
However in the “1533’ Lancashire Visitation, there is this paragraph on pp. 79-80:
“It appears that Gilbert, son of William de Notton of a Yorkshire family, who sealed with a shield of three pales, had, towards the close of the twelfth century, married Editha, lady of Barton, who was a daughter of the baronial house of Gredle or Grell, and had been endowed with the great manor of Barton, which was a member of their fee of Manchester. Assuming a surname from this estate, they abandoned the use of the arms of Notton, and adopted the canting coat of three boards heads erased and erected, quaeri BOARTON.”
There are various footnotes which make a coherent account but one that is at variance with the more modern story in VCH. I wonder what is the more likely interpretation?

In The Dictionary of British Arms, Medieval Ordinary, vol 3, there are a couple of Notton arms, one of York and one of Cambs, both of the right period, but the connection, if any, with this William, is unknown.
