Biographer of his brother John.
In 1821, through his wife he inherited the property of Robert Carrick, banker of Glasgow, and adopted the latter’s surname to conform with his will.
He and his wife are thought to have had at least three children.
A strong propagandist for vaccination against smallpox, by using cowpox.

In 1851 he was living at 11 Grafton Street, parish of St George Hanover Sq, Middx with his wife and three daughters aged 49, 48 and 46. They had nine servants attending on them.
