I have found him also on a Rowland family tree site where he is a descendant of a Rowland family which can be traced back to the late 16th century.
The site is at <http://www.rowlandgenerations.org/>;.
On that site there is a suite of spreadsheets to be downloaded and the Mawles are to be found on sheets 15 and 19 combined with 20. The link between the Rowland and Mawle sheets is that a Mawle niece of William’s married a Rowland in the early 20th century, making one Elsie Mary Mawle the grandmother of Richard Rowland who has written the family history and constructed the tables.
Richard Rowland and I have been in e-mail contact and he added this gem on his uncle:
“Did you spot my Blog entry about Uncle Billie's distinguished and lucky career as a WW1 fighter ace.
He used to terrify air cadets by throwing the joystick out of his plane, saying it was unnecessary!”
