26 Jun 1950: Obituary: “Major Hugh Edmund Ethelston Peel, DL, JP, High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire in 1907, died at his home near Wrexham yesterday at the age of 78.
“The son of the late Edmund Peel, he was born in 1871 and was educated at Eton. For a time he held a militia commission in the King’s Own Shropshire Light Infantry and later transferred to the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry. He was a notable rider to hounds and had served as Master of the Wynnstay Hunt and as steward on a number of courses. As a breeder he was well known, having bred Penthlyn, a bay gelding which won the Grand national at Gatwick in 1918 and at Aintree in the ensuing year. The horse was registered in his wife’s name.
“He was also greatly interested in coursing and twice won the Waterlooe Cup. For the first few months of the 1914-18 war he was with the Remount Service, but later cooperated with the late Lord Kenyon in raising the second line of Welsh Horse. For many years he was an alderman of the Flintshire County Council and was chairman of the council in 1924. He was appointed to the Commission of the peace in Flintshire in 1892 and in Denbighshire in 1903 and had served as chairman of the Overton Bench.
“he married in 1892 Gwladys, daughter of Captain C G H Rowley-Conwy. She died in 1931 and he is survived by a son of the marriage.”
