This would make her 24 at marriage, sounds reasonable.

In 1851 she was living with her daughter and said she was a widow “of the late Capt H Duncan RN” and born in Plymouth, Devon and was 76, thus born in 1775.

So the above death information is nor hers!

The words on the licence were:

“Henry Duncan Esqr Lieutenant of His Majesty’s Ship The Tremesding

appeareth personally, and maketh Oath, that he is an unmarried man, upwards of Twenty one years of age.  [there is also a ‘(22)’ on the left of this line and Daryl Coup speculates that it might be his age; good point.]

and not related within the forbidden Degrees to Mary Luscombe of East Sonehouse Spinster

for the Marriage of whom the said Henry Duncan Licence is prayed.  And Thomas Netherton maketh Oath that the said Mary Luscombe ia an unmarried woman upwards of Twenty one years of age.

[maketh Oath, and saith, that she, the said] [struck out]

and that
she the said Mary Luscombe hath her usual Abode, during four weeks last past, within the Parish of East Stonehouse aforesaid.  And he the said Henry Duncan on his Oath saith that he knows no just Cause why he, the said Henry Duncan may not be lawfully married to her, the said Mary Luscombe.
