I can find neither he nor his wife in the 1911 census, though their son was with his grandmother. I suspect they were abroad.
In 1891 there was a Herbert Coles boarding at a school in Tiverton and born in Oxford.
In 1881 there was a family of a printer and stationer in Broad St, Oxford with a Herbert J Coles aged 4, but this age does not quite agree with the birth registration.
Also in 1881 there was a vicar’s grandson Herbert J Coles living with his grandparents Rev Jefferis W and Mary J B Coles. This has to be him. His mother was also there, but no sign of his father:
