Notes for Frances Diana Denton
It is unclear whether her surname was Denton or Penton.  In McCrea’s book she is Denton, but in the pedigree with the book, she is Penton.  He says her father was “Captain Denton, E.I.C.S.”.

Brian Bouchards has produced these gems on France’s ancestry:

1. “Her father was a son of Rev. Thomas Denton, Rector of Ashtead (1724 –1777).”

2. “Her mother was Mercy Evans”

3. “John White — writer 1778: Sub-Secretary in the Public Department, 1787: Remembrancer to Criminal Courts, 1790: returned to Europe, January, 1800. Married at St John’s Church to Matilda Denton on November 4, 1 784. Her sister Charlotte married Robert Tomlinson, senior merchant (accountant to the Board of Trade 1784-1787) on the same day. Their brother, Thomas Denton, Chief Officer of the Phoenix Indiaman, married Mercy Evans (also at St. John’s Church) on October 22, 1786.”

4. “The younger Thomas Denton was pensioned off by HEICS , 2/7/1799  and died shortly afterwards - pension to Mercy Denton, Chief Mate's widow 23/4/1800. Mercy expired in 1845 whilst living with her son, MI:-

‘In Memory of Mercy Denton, who, after displaying in a long life the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, died in peace, 11 January 1845, aged 82. Beneath is a brass to Robert Abercrombie Denton, M. A. Rector of Stour Provost and Todbere…’”

So her ancestry is:

Thomas Denton, Rector of Ashtead (1724-1777)
