Notes for Sir William Berners
He may well have been descended from Hugh de Berners who held 5 hides in Islington from the bishop of London in 1086.

Chauncy’s History and Antiquities of Hertfordshire pub 1826, pp. 316-7, gives the following as William’s ancestry:

Hugh de Berners, mentioned in Domesday - and in Keats-Rohan’s Domesday People
|
Ralph de Berners = Nesta Burnel, heir in her issue of Paine Burnel
|
Ralph de Berners = Isold de Say, sister of Jeoffrey de Say
Ralph is probably
the person in K-R’s
Domesday
Descendants
|
William de Berners = Beatrix, da. of Ralph de Swyneburne
of Berners Roding,
Essex, son of Ralph
in K-R’s DD.

It is very tempting to include all of these in this database, but I have found no other evidence for any of the wives, apart from William’s own wife, nor for the first Ralph, son of the first Hugh.

Chauncy does include a Hugh de Berners, son of the first Ralph, with a wife Hawise de Wibof, and who dsp; K-R in DD p. 323 has a Hugh II de Berners with a wife Jueta.
