Notes for Sir John de Rokesley
According to Hasted’s Kent, he accompanied Richard I to Palestine and was at the siege of Acon (otherwise Acre?) there. Hasted says this John was grandson of Gregory de Rokesle who was several times mayor of London; Gregory in his turn was grandson of Malger de Rokesle who may have been in Domesday.
And indeed Malger de Rokesle is in Keats-Rohan’s Domesday people, pp. 293-4. However K-R says this Malger was ancestor of the FitzHelto family of Aldington, Kent; Malger’s son was Richard and Richard’s son was Helto and Helto’s son was William. In Domesday People p. 907, K-R says of this William that he dsp in 1180 when his heirs were his three sisters, Alice, mother of Asnfrid II de Canci, Sybil de Ceriton and Emma, mother of Robert I de Setvans.
I suspect Hasted has things confused about the Rokesle of North Cray.
