Notes for Jane Skeffington
The Ham MSS says she was “dau. of Clotworthy Skeffington, 2nd viscount Masserene”. However, from CP, the second viscount was John Skeffington and the third, fourth and fifth viscounts were all Clotworthys, though CB also states she was “da. of Clotworthy (Skeffington), 2d viscount Massereene”. Burke’s Peerage thankfully includes Jane and her husband and shows her as the dau. of the third viscount; the latter’s birth date of 1660 tends to confirm this.
